Upcoming 2019 Food Trends

It seems like just yesterday when we created our first Upcoming Food Trends blog post for 2018. It was an incredible year through which we got to witness many of the projected trends pick up and we were able to incorporate them into our menus.

With 2019 around the corner, we are excited to present to you another edition of the hottest food trends! Many of these trends reflect changing attitudes towards health and the environment – read on to find out.

1. Oat Milk

For the past few years, we’ve constantly seen alternative milk products being introduced into the market. Soy milk and almond milk have had thir reign due to their health benefits and unique tastes, but now it’s time to make some room on the dairy aisle for oat milk! You may have already seen signs popping up around local coffee shops advertising their oat milk availability and that’s because this product is here to stay in 2019.

Many consumers started switching to alternative milk products in recent years due to a variety of reasons. Today, many consumers are switching from almond milk to oat milk because of environmental reasons. It takes a lot of water to grow almonds and with recent droughts and rising temperatures across the nation, oat milk is positioned as a much more ecologically friendly option. Aside from needing less water for production, the nutritional composition of oat milk doesn’t differ much from almond milk, making it a comparable option for those looking for alternatives.

With the recent increase in interest towards healthy and conscious eating, mushrooms have become more widely used and incorporated into diets. Mushrooms are high in antioxidants and vitamin D which in combination, help our bodies prevent the production of cancer cells. The consumption of mushrooms also helps the body obtain higher levels of fiber, potassium and vitamin C which help regulate blood pressure and decrease the chances of heart disease.

In 2019, we’ll be seeing the different varieties of mushrooms being used as carb substitutes and as a result, helping with weight management. From shiitake to portobello mushrooms, the rich and umami taste of mushrooms can create a mouthful experience.

3. Reinvented Frozen Treats

Tasty and healthy frozen treats are on the rise! Enjoying a frozen treat can cool down on a hot summer day but it certainly doesn’t help when the calories add up. People are looking to indulge without remorse so that’s why delicious, plant-based, non-dairy and sugar-free alternatives are in demand.

The specialty frozen aisle will start to get packed with some fun flavors like avocado, hummus and coconut water this year. Get ready for a refreshing and guilt-free summer with this upcoming 2019 food trend!

4. Marvellous Minis

A wedding food trend we’ve seen become popular in the last few years that just continues to take over is the marvellous minis! Instead of going for traditional canapés for cocktail hour, consider shrinking some of your favorite mains and serve them with a fun little presentation. When it comes to this 2019 food trend, less is more and the possibilities are endless!

Not only does circulating bite-sized goodies make it easy for your guests to eat and mingle, it also allows you to showcase a variety of flavours while keeping your budget in check.

Pro tip: Don’t forget to minify your desserts! Get creative and have fun with the endless combinations!

5. Sustainable Food Packaging

Our current food system is addicted to plastic, or at least highly dependent on it. With increasing environmental awareness and initiatives, consumers are becoming more conscious of their habits and have adopted more sustainable practices. We are entering an era that promotes more biodegradable plastics and better recycling habits.

In 2019, we are expecting individuals to invest in reusable containers and for supermarkets and producers to minimize single-use plastics.

Challenge: We challenge YOU to take initiative and reduce the amount of plastic in your household! There are easy ways you can start reducing plastic waste in your everyday life, from bringing your own containers for take-out at restaurants to avoiding the use of plastic straws.
