5 Things to Do Right After You Get Engaged

We acknowledge that you must be going through a rollercoaster of emotions. The excitement may be starting to wear off and turning into nerves of having to plan and get ready for the big day. In our 20+ years in business, we’ve been able to learn a few things about planning the perfect wedding. With the help of our talented event designers, we’ve prioritized a list of five things to do in the first few weeks after you get engaged.
1 – Dream Big
This moment is about you and your partner! Feel the joy and let it sink in. There is only a certain amount of time where you’ll be able to call each other fiancés so make sure to say it often.
After you’ve enjoyed engagement bliss for as long as you’d like, this is the time to start gathering inspiration from online sources and advice from people you love. Even though things will probably change during the planning process, it’s important for you to have a rough idea of how you envision your special day before you start meeting with vendors and putting down deposits.
Relish tip: At this stage, it’s not essential to have all the details sorted out. Be yourself and have fun with the brainstorming process!
2 – Find a Photographer
A professional photographer should be one of the first vendors you book for two reasons. Number one: The best photographers usually get booked months in advance for popular wedding seasons like summer and spring. Making this one of the first things you book will help you be ahead of the game. Number two: It’s always a good idea to have professional engagement photos early on for the numerous announcements you’ll have to make leading to your wedding day. 3 – Pick a Date and Research Venues
This step is an important one – it will determine details like guest capacity, decor and vendors so consider spending a big portion of your planning time and budget on making this decision. Most couples we’ve worked with will book their venues 12-18 months in advance to have enough time to plan their perfect day. When researching and visiting venues, make sure to select a location that feels right and has the atmosphere you’re looking for. Look back at your original drawing board and assess what venues are available that meet your criteria.

4 – Draft your Guest List
Drafting, making iterations and cutting your guest list might not be as fun as cutting your cake but it is an essential step that only you and your partner can do. Start off by writing down your ‘dream list’. Think about all of the people who you’d like to share this special day with. For this part, take venue size and budget out of the equation. You’ll have to do some trimming eventually but it’s better to exhaust your thinking and not leave anyone out by accident. Once you’re done with your list and you’re ready to come back to reality, think of your venue’s capacity and budget before starting the trimming process. When trying to reach your ideal guest number, consider aligning on some rules between you and your partner to make the process easier. Some examples are no kids under 12 or if neither of you has spoken to them in 3 years and they’re not related, don’t invite them.
